About

About this register

A record of the rooms the French summer festival took over, sorted by what encloses them.

This site treats festival venues as one class of object: a room with a certain number of hard sides, a surface, a floor and usually no roof. Each entry names one venue or one craft, gives its commune where it has one, and says what the enclosure does to sound.

How it is sorted

Six sections, arranged by enclosure rather than by size or repertoire: Four Walls and Cloister and Church for rooms closed on every side, One Wall and Cut Limestone for rooms with a single working surface, No Walls for ground where the room has to be built, and Crews and Craft for the people who put it up and take it down.

Entries are numbered in the order they were written, not by importance. The whole register lists all nineteen in one table.

What it is not

It is not a listings site. There are no editions, programmes, line-ups, tickets or travel notes here, and nothing addressed to somebody planning to attend. The subject is the building, the surface and the physics.

Les JMF is the name of this site. The initials are initials: they are not expanded here, and the site speaks for no organisation, body or programme.

Sources and images

Photographs are credited beneath their captions. The locator map is drawn from supplied geometry at true coordinates, corrected for latitude, rather than sketched. Measurements quoted in entries come from the sources named in that entry.
